Middlesbrough have at last sealed the transfer of Brazilian Alfonso Alves from Heerenveen, for a club record of £12 million. The saga had dragged on for weeks and went right up to an hour before the transfer deadline to be confirmed.
Alves had previously signed a deal with AZ Alkmaar, but the Dutch Football Association failed to sanction the move, allowing the Herrenveen to agree a deal with Middlesbrough.
Alves who has scored a monumental 45 goals in 38 appearances for Heerenveen, is looking forward to playing in the Premier League, saying “I am very happy to be able to play in such an important league, the biggest in Europe.”
‘Boro manager Gareth Southgate was relieved that the deal had finally gone through, “I’m delighted to have completed the deal. Alfonso brings us something different, in that he is a goalscorer who does most of his best work inside the box.”
